Matthew Johnson, M.D.

Dr. Matthew C. Johnson, is a vitreoretinal surgeon specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal diseases, including retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal vascular disease, and complex disorders of the retina and vitreous. He completed his vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at the USC Roski Eye Institute / Retina Vitreous Associates Combined Fellowship Program in Los Angeles and his ophthalmology residency at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center.

His commitment to education has been recognized with the USC Roski Eye Institute Fellow of the Year Teaching Award and the University of Michigan Walter R. Parker Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Johnson continues to teach and supervise USC ophthalmology residents and vitreoretinal surgery fellows in both the clinic and operating room. He has served as a co-investigator on clinical trials evaluating emerging treatments for retinal diseases, and his research has been recognized at leading ophthalmology and retina conferences.

Dr. Johnson has been recognized twice for excellence in teaching, receiving the Fellow of the Year – Teaching Award at USC Roski Eye Institute and the Walter R. Parker Resident Teaching Award, 1st Place, at the University of Michigan. His commitment to mentorship extends beyond the classroom: he founded an ophthalmology mentorship program that has grown to a community of more than 600 medical students and residents.

Dr. Johnson is also committed to expanding access to ophthalmic care for underserved communities. In Detroit, he was involved with Sight Savers, a community-based initiative focused on improving access to eye care. He has also presented research at the American Academy of Ophthalmology examining disparities in access to glaucoma care among patients with Medicaid and commercial health insurance.
