Dougherty First in Southern California to Offer CATz Topography-Guided LASIK

LASIK patients have a new, far superior option that can even improve night vision and fix prior surgery

Dr. Dougherty recently performed the first topography-guided LASIK in Southern California following FDA approval of the procedure, which is far more precise than even the most advanced wavefront-guided LASIK.

The new topography-guided technology – known as Customized Aspheric Treatment Zone (or “CATz”) – maps the patient’s cornea by measuring nearly 7,000 points of light, versus the 200 points of light measured with wavefront technology.

CATz provides uniquely detailed topographic maps – one of the cornea prior to surgery, and another of the cornea as it should appear after correction with LASIK. These before and after images enable the surgeon to correct any nearsightedness and astigmatism with unparalleled precision, as well as smooth out even minor irregularities.

Dr. Dougherty was a principal investigator for the CATz FDA clinical trial, as well as the leading enroller of patients.

Nearly half of the LASIK patients treated during the trial achieved “supervision” (better than 20/20 vision), with reduced risk of post-LASIK complications such as glare, halos and night vision problems. In fact, CATz is the first LASIK technology to demonstrate improved night vision after surgery. In addition, it may be used to correct such complications following LASIK performed with less precise technology.

The system approved by the FDA is the NIDEK NAVEX Quest EC-5000 Excimer Laser System. Dr. Dougherty describes the laser as the new “gold standard” for LASIK, with results that are unsurpassed for all types of LASIK patients.
