What is Presbyopia?
Presbyopia is a naturally-occurring condition which occurs when the eye’s lens loses its flexibility. As we age, the lens of our eye loses its flexibility and becomes firm and cannot change shape as easily as when we were young. This is important because the lens changing shape is what allows you to focus on objects within your vision.
Starting in your 40’s, the sight reduction associated with Presbyopia can become pronounced and noticeable. You may notice that it is harder to see and focus on close objects. You may need to hold reading materials at arms-length to see them properly.
Presbyopia is not the same condition as farsightedness. Farsightedness (Hyperopia) is due to a flat cornea or other abnormalities in your eye shape that causes it to be unable to focus correctly. It is not an age-related condition like Presbyopia.

The RainDrop corneal implant is an implant that is placed under a LASIK flap in the eye. It is best for those in their 40’s and 50’s who have excellent distance vision but who have begun to lose their close-up vision due to the loss of focusing power from Presbyopia.
The RainDrop is usually implanted in one eye, typically the non-dominant eye, in order to allow for better reading vision. This implant gives patients excellent reading and computer vision, without taking away significant distance vision (like the loss in distance vision that occurs in monovision LASIK) and negates the need for reading glasses.
The RainDrop procedure only takes about two minutes and results are experienced almost immediately. There are minimal risks for infection or other complications. The RainDrop corneal implant is also removable- If you are unhappy with the changes in vision that come as a result of the procedure, they may be reversed.
