Men’s Eye Health: Vision Conditions Men Are More Likely to Face

When it comes to vision care, men often don’t seek help until problems arise. However, research shows that men are more likely than women to develop certain sight-threatening conditions and they’re less likely to schedule regular eye exams.

At DLV Vision, we’re shining a spotlight on men’s eye health, especially during Men’s Health Month, to raise awareness of the specific risks men face and how proactive care can make all the difference.

Glaucoma: The Silent Thief of Sight

One of the most common eye conditions disproportionately affecting men is glaucoma, a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve and can lead to permanent vision loss. Because glaucoma often develops without early symptoms, many don’t realize there’s a problem until significant damage has occurred.

According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, men—particularly African American and Hispanic men over 40—are at higher risk. Routine eye exams that include intraocular pressure measurements and optic nerve assessments are crucial for early detection.

Diabetic Retinopathy and Men’s Risk Profile

Men are also more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, which puts them at greater risk for diabetic retinopathy. This condition occurs when high blood sugar levels damage blood vessels in the retina, potentially leading to blindness if left untreated.

Since diabetic retinopathy can progress without obvious symptoms, annual dilated eye exams are essential for men with diabetes or prediabetes. Early treatment, including laser procedures and medications, can help prevent vision loss.

Retinal Detachment: A Higher Incidence in Men

Another serious eye emergency seen more frequently in men is retinal detachment. This condition occurs when the retina pulls away from the back of the eye, which can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated promptly.

Risk factors include severe nearsightedness, previous eye injuries, or a family history of the condition—all of which are more commonly reported in men. Symptoms like sudden flashes of light, floaters, or a curtain-like shadow over the field of vision require immediate attention.

UV Exposure and Occupational Hazards

Men are also more likely to work in outdoor or industrial environments, increasing their exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, chemicals, and flying debris. Over time, these exposures raise the risk for cataracts, pterygium (surfer’s eye), and traumatic eye injuries.

To protect vision, men should wear UV-blocking sunglasses and proper protective eyewear when working in high-risk settings or playing sports. These simple habits can significantly reduce the risk of both acute and long-term damage.
