In 1995, the FDA approved LASIK surgery for use in the United States. Today, LASIK is a hugely popular, widely known procedure. The term LASIK actually stands for laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis. Keratomileusis is the process by which a surgeon cuts open and reshapes the cornea in the eye. LASIK’s popularity comes from its high rate of success, with patient satisfaction at about 95 percent. LASIK can drastically improve visual acuity, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Dr. Paul Dougherty has performed over 30,000 vision correction procedures!

Dr. Paul Dougherty was one of the surgeons who first began testing the LASIK procedure for the FDA on an investigational basis. Now, almost two decades later, Dr. Paul Dougherty has performed over 30,000 vision correction procedures. Dr. Paul Dougherty was also one of the first ophthalmologists in the US to have LASIK surgery performed on his own eyes. Not only does he have extensive experience performing the procedure, but he can also relate to the concerns of patients in a way that other ophthalmologists cannot.

Dr. Paul Dougherty graduated first in his class at the UCLA Medical School. Where other doctors may just do a weekend course, Dr. Dougherty is actually an MD. He studied with and trained under Dr. Richard Lindstrom, the surgeon who first popularized LASIK surgery in the US. Dr. Paul Dougherty is also one of 40 surgeons in the world who serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Refractive Surgery. The prestigious Cataract and Refractive Surgery Todaydescribed Dr. Paul Dougherty as “one of the most prominent names in the field of cataract and refractive surgery worldwide.”

Dr. Doughery is known as the “Doctor’s Doctor”.

Due to his extremely high level of experience, Dr. Paul Dougherty is actually the vision surgeon that other ophthalmologists go to when they need surgery. He’s referred to as the Doctor’s Doctor in refractive surgery, and has performed surgeries on many, many medical professionals and physicians throughout the US. On top of that, he is also often called in as a consultant to other surgeons when they have a particularly complicated case.

Having suffered from vision problems much of his life, Dr. Paul Dougherty’s main goal is to help people regain their vision. One technique that he developed with that goal in mind is the unique combination of cataract surgery and LASIK surgery, which allows him to better tailor his surgery to each patient’s unique case. While Dr. Dougherty has many achievements in the field of refractive surgery, he is also very proud to be able to share those achievements with other surgeons, in order to help more people see better. Dr. Paul Dougherty has taught thousands of surgeons about his techniques and the technologies he uses.
