Visian ICL (Implantable Contacts)
Dougherty Laser Vision was the first vision correction center in the Western US to offer the remarkable STAAR Visian ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) for the high definition treatment of mild to severe nearsightedness.
Approved by the FDA in December 2005, the Visian ICL is an implantable contact lens made of a biocompatible material called collamer that allows the lens to be rolled into a tiny cylinder for insertion into the eye. As the lens is inserted, it gently unfolds behind the iris, where it remains virtually undetectable to an observer. (view procedure video) - (link to STAAR procedure video)
The Visian ICL can provide clear vision for nearsighted patients who are eligible for LASIK but demand the highest quality vision. It is also suitable for patients who are uncomfortable with laser surgery or are not good candidates for LASIK due to thin corneas or prescriptions that exceed the LASIK treatment range. The Visian ICL is designed to remain in the eye permanently, but can be removed or exchanged if necessary.
Dr. Dougherty helped pioneer the Visian ICL technology and was one of just a handful of surgeons in the US to serve as a principal investigator for the Visian ICL FDA clinical study. As such, he has implanted the Visian ICL internationally and on an investigational basis since 1999, long before it was approved for use in the US. In January 2006, Dougherty Laser Vision hosted the first post- approval ICL training session for US surgeons, and ophthalmologists from across the nation continue to come to our surgery centers to observe Dr. Dougherty perform the implant procedure.
Dr. Dougherty was also the first surgeon in the US to perform the Visian ICL procedure bilaterally, on both of a patient's eyes during the same office visit. He is one of the few surgeons to offer this technique, which is far more convenient for the patient.
In addition, Dougherty Laser Vision is one of the first Visian ICL centers in the nation to offer Sonomed UBM (ultrasound bio-microscopy), which measures the precise area for lens insertion. This technology helps Dr. Dougherty perform the implant procedure with exceptional precision, and in-turn achieve superior results.
